I think I may have already posted this dinosaur, holding a different sign earlier in her life.

Friend and I once won a brownie in Chattanooga for being able to name these- after we had coincidentally looked it up earlier in the day. It was the highlight of my life.

Sign of the Day - Road Trip Edition: Ghost Signs in Spokane

Walldogs must have loved Spokane. Clearly they made a lot of money there. You can’t step one foot into the downtown area with out coming across a ghost sign. They did a good job too. Some of these wall ads must be almost 100 years old and are still in good condition. I’m impressed that both city officials and graffiti artists have respected the signs enough to let them be. Unfortunately, there are some people who do not share that view.

Gay Dolphin Gift Cove sign on Flickr.
The Gay Dolphin Gift Cove has been a kitsch institution in Myrtle Beach since 1948. Gone are the glycerin strings that stretched upward through the atrium and blew my mind as a kid. But when I visited in October 2009, the place still felt like it had barely changed in half a century. It was still the place to shop for shells, toys, and actual postcards from a forgotten time.
